2015 is a very special year for West Dorset Mencap as we celebrate our 50th anniversary! Members, volunteers and supporters of the charity were invited to a celebration held at the Conservative Club in Bridport on Tuesday 19th May. Our Chairman, Linda Simpson said ‘It was tremendous to see such a fantastic turn out and to meet a good number of people who have helped and supported West Dorset Mencap over the years….here’s to the next fifty years!’.
After the celebration we held our Annual General Meeting and a presentation was made to Diane Taylor who has retired from the committee after 30 years of service. Diane has worked tirelessly with both the committee and also the Bridport Gateway Club. Diane will continue to help out at the club but the day to day running has been passed to fellow committee member, Harry Britton.
The evening welcomed two speakers, both past chairman of West Dorset Mencap; Mr Trevor Ware and Commander Richard Carpendale. They both spoke about their time with the charity and the achievements that have been made. Today, the charity has a thriving charity shop in East Street which raises funds for people with learning disabilities living in our local area. The charity also has a caravan at Littlesea in Weymouth which offers holidays for Learning Disabled and their carers. If you would like to support West Dorset Mencap and keep up to date with their work please do consider becoming a member for just £3 per year.
Ou thanks to everyone who supports our charity and also to Sue and the team at Oh Crumbs cafe for providing the refreshments and a wonderful celebration cake and to Bridport Conservative Club for providing a fantastic venue.
